Entrance of a correctional facility in Abeokuta where a woman was arrested over an alleged drug smuggling attempt

Officials of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ibara, Abeokuta, Ogun State, have arrested a woman accused of attempting to smuggle substances suspected to be psychoactive drugs into the correctional facility.

The Ogun State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service said the suspect was arrested at about 1:33pm on Friday, August 28, 2026, during a routine screening at the entrance of the custodial centre.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Odukoya Olayinka, disclosed the arrest in a statement.

According to the statement, the woman had visited an inmate classified as being on death row when correctional officers allegedly discovered a sachet of Milo beverage containing substances suspected to be “colos.”

The suspected contraband was detected during the standard screening process at the facility’s main gate.

“The discovery underscored the vigilance of our personnel and our commitment to preventing illicit substances and other prohibited items from entering custodial facilities,” Olayinka said.

The suspect was subsequently handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and possible prosecution.

“Following her arrest, she was handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and possible prosecution, in accordance with established procedures,” the statement said.

The Controller of Corrections in Ogun State, Kamoru Adesina, commended the officers involved in the arrest for their vigilance and professionalism.

Adesina also reaffirmed the Nigerian Correctional Service’s zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking and other criminal activities within custodial facilities.

He said correctional centres were established to reform and rehabilitate inmates and should not become channels for the circulation of illicit substances.

The Ogun State Command warned members of the public against attempting to compromise the security of correctional facilities by bringing prohibited items into them.

It added that anyone found engaging in such acts would face consequences in accordance with the law.
