Trump Announces Plans for ‘Massive’ Oil, Gas and Mineral Exploration in Greenland

US President Donald Trump has announced that large-scale oil, gas and mineral exploration is preparing to begin in Greenland, highlighting the Arctic island’s strategic importance to American and European security.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday, Trump declared: “Massive Oil, Gas, and Mineral Exploration is getting ready to begin in our new and beautiful Greenland!”

Citing experts, he claimed that “the amount of easily available oil is far greater than that of almost… anywhere in the world.” However, he provided no details about the proposed exploration projects or the extent of prospective American involvement.

The announcement comes amid heightened geopolitical interest in Greenland, which occupies a strategically important position in the Arctic and lies along a potential missile route between Russia and the United States.

Greenland also holds deposits of rare earth elements and other minerals that could become increasingly significant as melting polar ice opens new shipping routes.

Greenland’s Strategic Importance

Trump has repeatedly emphasised Greenland’s importance to US national defence, particularly his proposed “Golden Dome” missile defence shield.

In the same Truth Social post, he described the island’s position as “second to none” for American and European security.

“Any future attack on the United States will have to come across Greenland, where our Defense will routinely knock down drones, missiles, or any other form of weapon not yet even conceived,” Trump said.

“It gives us time, location, and sightline, like nowhere else in the World!” he added.

The announcement follows a security agreement reportedly signed in September by Washington and the leaders of Greenland and Denmark, after Trump threatened to take control of the strategically important Danish territory by force.

Under the reported 10-page agreement, the United States is to establish two additional military bases in southern and eastern Greenland, at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig, respectively. The US already operates the Pituffik military base in the island’s north.

Local Concerns Over Exploration

The prospect of expanded resource exploration has also raised concerns among Greenlandic residents and authorities.

In August, media reports about preparatory operations by a US oil company in a remote part of eastern Greenland reportedly caused unease among local communities and officials.

Trump’s latest announcement did not identify the companies involved, specify exploration locations or provide a timeline for the proposed activities.

The extent to which the plans will proceed, and their implications for Greenland’s resource development and local communities, remain unclear.
