Mr Ibu’s Widow Appeals for Support Over Rent, School Fees and Electricity Bills

More than a year after the death of beloved Nollywood comic actor John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, his widow and children have made a heartfelt appeal to Nigerians for support, revealing the severe financial difficulties they have been facing since his passing.

The emotional plea was made during a video interview with content creator King Mitchy on Wednesday, where members of the late actor’s family opened up about their daily struggles and the harsh realities of life without the man who was once one of Nigeria’s most recognizable entertainers.

Speaking candidly during the interview, Mr Ibu’s widow painted a troubling picture of the family’s current situation, describing how mounting financial pressures have affected virtually every aspect of their lives. According to her, basic necessities that many families take for granted have become difficult to afford.

She disclosed that their electricity supply had been disconnected for approximately two months because they were unable to settle outstanding bills, forcing the family to adapt to life without power.

The absence of electricity has created significant challenges in their day-to-day living. Beyond the discomfort of living in darkness, the family now reportedly moves from place to place at night in search of locations where they can charge their mobile phones.

Mr Ibu’s widow also revealed that their financial difficulties have affected access to running water, leaving the family dependent on a well for their daily water needs.

Describing the hardship, she said, “We fetch water from the well. Because I have not paid the house rent. And they have even cut my lights for two months now. No lights since. We have been like that. Every night we go to look for a place to charge our phones. And… It’s not easy.”

Her remarks highlighted the growing burden of unpaid expenses, including rent and utility bills, which continue to weigh heavily on the household.

The situation has become particularly distressing because of its impact on the education of the late actor’s children. According to the widow, unpaid school fees now threaten their ability to remain in school.

The revelation underscored the broader challenges faced by many families after the loss of a primary breadwinner, especially when income sources become uncertain and financial obligations continue to accumulate.

“Right now, they can’t go to school again. I can even show you the message the school sent me today,” she said.

The statement reflected the urgency of the family’s circumstances, as educational opportunities for the children appear increasingly at risk.

During the interview, one of Mr Ibu’s daughters expressed gratitude to her mother for her resilience and determination despite the challenges confronting the family.

The young girl praised her mother’s efforts to keep the household together and ensure the children continue to receive care amid the ongoing hardship.

“I want to thank God for my mom. She tries everything she can to feed us, to pay our school fees, to make us happy,” she said.

Her comments offered a glimpse into the sacrifices being made behind the scenes as the family works to cope with financial pressures while trying to maintain stability.

The interview also drew attention to the emotional and economic realities that many families encounter following the death of a loved one. For Mr Ibu’s family, the transition has been especially difficult given the loss of a figure who was not only a husband and father but also a major source of financial support.

King Mitchy, the content creator who conducted the interview, explained that the purpose of sharing the family’s story was to seek assistance from members of the public who may be willing to support them.

According to the interviewer, the immediate needs include payment of school fees, settlement of rent obligations and restoration of electricity to the family home.

The appeal has since generated reactions on social media, where many Nigerians have expressed sympathy for the family and reflected on the legacy of the late actor, whose performances brought laughter to millions across the country and beyond.

For decades, Mr Ibu occupied a unique place in Nigeria’s entertainment industry. Renowned for his comic timing, expressive acting style and memorable performances, he became one of Nollywood’s most celebrated actors and a household name across Africa.

His career spanned numerous films and television productions, earning him widespread admiration and a loyal fan base. Through his work, he helped shape the comedy genre within Nollywood and contributed significantly to the growth of the industry.

The actor’s health struggles in the years leading up to his death also attracted public attention and support. Many Nigerians followed updates on his condition and offered prayers during his prolonged battle with illness.

Sadly, Mr Ibu died on March 2, 2024, at the age of 62, marking the end of a career that left an indelible mark on Nigerian cinema.

His passing was widely mourned by colleagues, fans and industry stakeholders who celebrated his contributions to entertainment and remembered the joy he brought to audiences throughout his lifetime.

Now, more than a year after his death, his family says it is facing an uphill battle to survive financially.

Their public appeal serves as a reminder of the challenges that can emerge when families lose key providers and are left to navigate mounting expenses with limited resources. It also highlights the importance of support systems, whether from relatives, friends, industry colleagues or well-meaning members of the public.

As the widow and children continue to seek assistance, their hope remains that support from compassionate Nigerians will help ease the burden of unpaid rent, school fees and utility bills, allowing the family to regain some stability and move forward despite the difficult circumstances they currently face.
