Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, in Kogi State, has expelled two students over alleged involvement in a same-sex relationship.
The university announced the disciplinary action in a statement issued on Friday by its Information and Public Relations Unit, confirming that expulsion letters had been sent to the affected students.
According to the institution, the letters were signed by the Deputy Registrar (Academics), Eli Gbadafu, and the decision was taken in line with the provisions of the Students’ Handbook, Second Edition, as amended in 2025.
The expelled students were identified as Onumoko Hamza, a Biology Education student, and Abdulazeez Eneji, who was studying Mining Engineering.
The university said the expulsion was approved during the 31st Regular Meeting of the University Senate after it considered recommendations from the Students’ Disciplinary Committee.
However, the institution did not disclose when or where the alleged incident occurred.
In a separate disciplinary action, the university suspended four students for one academic session over their involvement in a fight.
Those suspended are Favour Akowe of the Microbiology Department, Simbiat Babamuharuna of Biology, and Zainab Omayoza and Sukura Bukola, both from the Biochemistry Department.
Reaffirming its commitment to discipline, the university warned that it would continue to sanction students found guilty of violating its rules and regulations.
Students were also urged to familiarise themselves with the provisions of the Students’ Handbook and conduct themselves in accordance with the institution’s regulations.
Same-sex relationships remain illegal in Nigeria under the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, signed into law in January 2014, which prescribes up to 14 years’ imprisonment for those convicted of same-sex sexual relationships.
