Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have repelled an attempted terrorist attack on a Forward Operating Base in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, killing several attackers and rescuing nine kidnapped civilians.
The Nigerian Army said the attack occurred at about 1:40 a.m. on August 2, when terrorists attempted to infiltrate the Forward Operating Base at Kasuwan Daji under the cover of darkness.
According to the military, troops detected the movement early and responded with coordinated firepower, forcing the attackers to retreat.
Reinforcements were subsequently deployed, leading to a pursuit of the fleeing terrorists, who had abducted residents during the assault.
The operation resulted in the rescue of nine kidnapped civilians.
However, the military confirmed that one Army officer and one police officer were killed during the gun battle, while two soldiers sustained gunshot wounds.
The injured personnel were airlifted for advanced medical treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.
In a statement, the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 8 Division Nigerian Army and Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, said troops have secured the area and are conducting follow-up operations.
“Troops have since secured and dominated the area, and are currently conducting exploitation operations to ascertain the full extent of the terrorists’ losses and ensure the safety of the community.”
The Army described the failed attack as another major setback for terrorist groups operating in the North-West, saying sustained military pressure has weakened their ability to launch coordinated assaults.
It also dismissed online reports claiming six security personnel were killed.
“Contrary to rumours circulating online that six personnel died, it is worthy to mention that only one Army officer and a policeman paid the supreme price.”
The military reaffirmed its commitment to continuing offensive operations against terrorist groups until peace and security are fully restored across the region.
