Russian bombardments killed at least 12 people and wounded dozens in Ukraine’s capital and surrounding region overnight, Ukrainian authorities said on Thursday.
The large-scale missile attack struck residential areas and warehouses in Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.
A medical facility and an educational institution were also damaged, according to the city’s military administration.
Klitschko later said 12 people had been killed in the capital, while 33 others were wounded.
In the Brovary district of the wider Kyiv region, one man was killed and another injured, regional governor Tymur Tkachenko said. It was not immediately clear whether the death was included in the toll reported by Klitschko.
“One industrial facility has been damaged. All relevant services are on site, working to extinguish the fire,” Tkachenko said.
Ukraine’s air force had earlier warned that Russian “Kalibr” missiles were moving near the village of Kagarlyk in the Kyiv region toward the capital.
The overnight attacks also triggered security responses in neighbouring NATO member states.
Poland’s military command said it mobilised aircraft and activated air defence systems to protect its airspace, particularly in areas bordering Ukraine.
Romania’s defence ministry said its radar detected aerial targets near the Ukrainian border, prompting the deployment of two Spanish fighter jets operating on NATO missions and a Romanian air force helicopter.
The ministry said a drone entered Romanian airspace near Galati before crashing in an unpopulated area of Tulcea.
Russia also reported a major Ukrainian drone attack.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 250 drones flew toward the Moscow region between Wednesday night and Thursday morning, with most intercepted at a significant distance from the capital.
“Twenty-eight drones were destroyed in the Moscow region,” Sobyanin said.
Ukraine and Russia have intensified long-range attacks in recent months, driving up civilian casualties on both sides of the four-and-a-half-year war.
While Kyiv continues to face near-nightly Russian attacks, Ukraine has also stepped up strikes inside Russia, partly in an effort to pressure Moscow into negotiations to end Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II.
