Russia has resumed air strikes on Kyiv following the expiration of a three-day pause ordered by President Vladimir Putin amid renewed diplomatic efforts by US President Donald Trump’s administration to end the war in Ukraine.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said late Monday that Russian drones targeted the Boryspil and Fastiv districts.
“Russians attacked Boryspil and Fastiv districts with drones,” the agency said in a statement posted on Telegram.
The Kyiv city military administration also declared an air raid alert over the capital, warning residents of an “enemy” drone attack and urging them to seek shelter.
A series of powerful explosions was heard across Kyiv early Tuesday, according to AFP journalists in the city. The blasts triggered car alarms in the centre of the capital, while authorities reported damage to buildings in Kyiv and the Boryspil and Fastiv districts.
An AFP journalist also reported seeing plumes of smoke and the glow of a fire as emergency crews responded to the attacks.
The renewed strikes came after Putin ordered a three-day suspension of Russian attacks on Kyiv during a weekend visit to the Russian and Ukrainian capitals by Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Russia’s state news agency TASS had earlier confirmed that the pause in strikes had expired.
The resumption of attacks comes as diplomatic efforts continue to find a path towards ending the conflict.
Witkoff has described the discussions with Russia and Ukraine as showing progress, raising the possibility of reviving three-way peace talks aimed at ending the war.
Despite the diplomatic push, the renewed attacks underscore the fragile nature of the latest efforts to secure a lasting halt to hostilities.
