Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has inspected the Katsina State Abattoir as the government moves to modernise the facility and develop it into a livestock processing and agro-industrial hub.
The inspection took place on Thursday, with the governor outlining plans to fully automate the abattoir, restore its refrigeration component and establish complementary processing facilities within the complex.
According to information from the Katsina State Government, the proposed expansion would include a tannery, blood meal plant, rumen processing unit, organic manure factory and water treatment plant.
The state government is pursuing the project as part of its broader focus on agriculture, value addition and job creation.
Speaking during the inspection, the Commissioner for Livestock Development, Prof. Ahmed Mohammed Bakori, said the integrated model could create direct and indirect employment opportunities while increasing revenue generation.
“The abattoir has the capacity to process 200 cows and 500 sheep or goats daily. With automation and the addition of these factories, we expect massive employment and increased revenue for the state,” Bakori said.
The proposed facilities would enable the state to process more livestock products and by-products within the abattoir complex rather than limiting operations to meat processing.
Radda said putting the facility and its associated industries into full operation would support value addition in the livestock sector, boost internally generated revenue and improve hygiene and efficiency in meat processing.
The governor assured that the government would fast-track the modernisation of the facility to enable it to operate at full capacity.
The move comes as Katsina seeks to strengthen its livestock value chain by expanding processing capacity and developing additional commercial uses for livestock by-products.
