The Northern Senators Forum has condemned the recent deadly attacks in Benue and Kaduna states, describing the killings as tragic and calling for stronger security measures to protect vulnerable communities.
In a statement issued by its Chairman, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, the forum expressed sympathy with the governments and people of both states, as well as families affected by the attacks.
The forum said 13 people were killed during an early morning attack on Efeyi Community in Ugboju, Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State on July 28, 2026, while several others sustained injuries.
It also recalled the July 26 attack on Naridon Village in Kamaru Ward, Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, where about 30 people, including women and children, were killed and several homes destroyed.
The senators described the attacks as a painful reminder of the country’s persistent security challenges and urged authorities to intensify efforts to protect lives and property.
The forum welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to strengthen national security through President Bola Tinubu’s approval of the expansion of the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions, alongside the recruitment of 28,000 additional military personnel.
According to the lawmakers, the move is expected to improve operational capacity, enhance strategic coverage across the country and restore public confidence in security agencies.
They, however, stressed that the expansion must be backed by adequate funding, modern equipment, logistics and improved welfare for military personnel to ensure the new formations operate effectively.
The forum also appealed to residents to support security agencies by providing timely and credible intelligence that could help prevent future attacks.
It further urged the Federal Government to ensure the swift arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the killings while providing humanitarian assistance to victims and displaced persons.
The senators maintained that lasting peace can only be achieved through coordinated security operations, improved intelligence gathering and sustained investment in Nigeria’s security architecture.
