Army Announces Major Leadership Shake-Up, Appoints New General Officers Commanding and Strategic Commanders 2026

Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu announces a major Nigerian Army reshuffle with new General Officers Commanding and senior commanders.

Nigerian Army Reshuffle Strengthens Operational Commands, Intelligence and Military Training Leadership

The Nigerian Army has carried out a sweeping reshuffle of its senior leadership, announcing a series of strategic appointments affecting operational formations, military institutions, intelligence units and key administrative offices as part of efforts to reinforce national security and improve operational effectiveness across Nigeria.

The extensive redeployment, approved by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, is one of the most significant leadership adjustments in recent months and reflects the Army’s continued drive to strengthen command structures amid evolving security challenges across the country.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, they said the latest postings involve General Officers Commanding (GOCs), brigade commanders, commandants of military institutions and principal staff officers at the Army Headquarters.

According to the statement, the changes are designed to enhance operational efficiency, improve leadership across formations and position the service to respond more effectively to emerging threats confronting the nation.

They explained that the strategic redeployment forms part of broader institutional reforms aimed at ensuring experienced officers are positioned where their expertise can deliver maximum operational impact.

New Leadership for Key Operational Commands

Among the most notable appointments is that of Major General WM Dangana, who has been named the new General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division Nigerian Army as well as Commander of Joint Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE.

He succeeds Major General EF Oyinlola and assumes responsibility for one of the Army’s critical operational divisions tasked with maintaining security and stability within its area of responsibility.

Similarly, Major General EI Okoro has been appointed General Officer Commanding 6 Division Nigerian Army and Land Component Commander of Joint Task Force South-South Operation DELTA SAFE.

He takes over from Major General EE Emeka and is expected to oversee military operations in the South-South region, an area that remains strategically important because of its energy infrastructure and persistent security concerns.

The appointments underscore their determination to sustain momentum in ongoing military operations while ensuring continuity of leadership across key theatres.

Strengthening Headquarters and Administrative Leadership

The reshuffle also affects several strategic administrative positions within the Nigerian Army.

Major General JR Lar has been appointed Commander of the Army Headquarters Garrison, a role central to coordinating activities within the nation’s military headquarters.

Brigadier General OM Oyekola has been named Acting Military Secretary (Army), where he will oversee personnel management and other critical administrative responsibilities.

Meanwhile, Brigadier General I Waziri will retain his current position as Chief of Staff in the Office of the Chief of Army Staff, providing continuity in one of the Army’s most important coordinating offices.

The decision to retain experienced officers in critical appointments reflects the Army’s effort to balance continuity with fresh leadership across its command structure.

Brigade Commanders Receive New Assignments

As part of measures aimed at improving combat readiness and operational leadership, several brigade commanders have also received new postings.

Brigadier General IB Buhari has been appointed Commander of Headquarters 63 Brigade, while Brigadier General K Rabiu will now serve as Commander of Headquarters 31 Artillery Brigade.

These formations play important roles in supporting military operations across various regions of the country, making their leadership appointments particularly significant as the Army continues efforts to strengthen field operations.

The Army noted that the appointments are intended to improve operational coordination and enhance the effectiveness of deployed troops.

Army Expands Focus on Technology and Modern Warfare

One of the standout appointments announced in the reshuffle highlights the Nigerian Army’s increasing investment in technology-driven security operations.

Major General SA Emmanuel has been appointed Commander of the Nigerian Army Space Command, a specialised formation established to support military operations through advanced technological capabilities and emerging domains of warfare.

According to the statement, the appointment demonstrates their commitment to adapting to the changing nature of modern security threats.

The statement noted that the appointment “reinforces their growing focus on emerging domains of warfare and technology-driven security operations.”

The creation and strengthening of specialised commands such as the Space Command reflect the military’s broader transformation agenda as security institutions worldwide increasingly integrate technology into intelligence gathering, surveillance, communications and operational planning.

Intelligence Leadership Also Receives Boost

The latest redeployment also extends to strategic intelligence operations.

Major General O Adegbe has been appointed Director of Intelligence and Security at Defence Headquarters, a position that plays a crucial role in coordinating intelligence activities across the Armed Forces.

The appointment comes as intelligence gathering continues to play an increasingly vital role in addressing security threats including terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of organised criminal activity.

Strong intelligence coordination remains central to military planning and successful operational outcomes across the country.

Military Education and Professional Development Prioritised

Beyond operational formations, the Army also announced several appointments within its training and educational institutions, highlighting its continued investment in professional military development.

Major General KE Chigbu has been appointed Deputy Commandant of the National Defence College, one of Nigeria’s foremost institutions for strategic military education.

Major General SD Makolo will now serve as Commandant of the Nigerian Army Armour School, where future armoured corps personnel receive specialised training.

Major General SO Adejimi has been appointed Commandant of the Nigerian Army School of Supply and Transport, while Major General FS Etim assumes the role of Chief of Training at the Headquarters Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), Nigerian Army.

These institutions play a critical role in developing future military leaders, refining operational doctrine and improving professional standards across the service.

The appointments are expected to contribute to ongoing efforts to modernise military education and strengthen institutional capacity.

Additional Strategic Appointments

The reshuffle also includes appointments across other important military establishments.

Brigadier General U Ahmad has been named Commandant of Depot Nigerian Army, Zaria, one of the Army’s principal training institutions responsible for producing soldiers and developing military manpower.

In addition, Major General KO Ukandu has been appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Post Housing Development Limited.

Major General AI Allison has also been named Managing Director of Defence Properties Limited.

These appointments extend the reshuffle beyond operational commands into institutions that support military welfare, infrastructure development and organisational sustainability.

Chief of Army Staff Charges Officers on Leadership

The Army said the redeployment is part of its broader transformation programme designed to build a more professional, combat-ready and responsive force capable of addressing contemporary security challenges.

According to the statement, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu urged all newly appointed senior officers to demonstrate the highest standards of leadership and professionalism in their new responsibilities.

“The COAS charged the newly appointed senior officers to justify the confidence reposed in them by demonstrating exemplary leadership, professionalism, innovation and unwavering commitment to the Nigerian Army’s constitutional mandate of defending Nigeria’s sovereignty, protecting its territorial integrity and supporting civil authority in maintaining peace and security across the nation,” the statement said.

The Army further reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing institutional reforms and operational excellence.

“The Nigerian Army remains resolute in its transformation drive and commitment to building a highly professional, combat-ready and people-oriented force capable of effectively addressing contemporary and future security challenges in pursuit of Nigeria’s national security objectives.”

The latest leadership changes come as the Nigerian military continues to confront multiple security challenges across different parts of the country, including insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, communal violence and threats to critical national infrastructure.

By repositioning experienced officers across operational commands, intelligence units, training institutions and strategic administrative offices, the Army aims to strengthen coordination, improve operational effectiveness and reinforce its ability to respond to both existing and emerging security threats.

The appointments also signal the service’s continued emphasis on leadership renewal, institutional development and technological advancement as it seeks to build a more agile force capable of meeting Nigeria’s evolving defence and security needs.
