CP Nnanna Oji Ama has assumed duty as the 36th Commissioner of Police of the Anambra State Police Command, pledging to strengthen security and protect lives and property across the state.
Ama formally took over on Monday, August 10, 2026, following a strategic redeployment approved by the Police Service Commission and Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu.
He succeeds AIG Ikioye Orutugu, who retired from the Nigeria Police Force after his promotion to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said Ama brings more than three decades of policing experience to his new assignment.
Before his deployment to Anambra, Ama served as Commissioner of Police, Intelligence and Training, at the Force Intelligence Department, Force Headquarters, Abuja. He had previously served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in the same department.
A native of Ekata in Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Ama holds a BSc (Hons) in Psychology from the University of Jos.
He joined the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Superintendent of Police and trained at the Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State.
His career has included senior roles in intelligence, criminal investigation, tactical operations, administration, public relations and strategic command.
His previous appointments include Deputy Commissioner of Police, General Investigation, FCID Abuja; Commanding Officer, No. 44 Police Mobile Force, Force Headquarters, Abuja; Area Commander, Nnewi, Anambra State; Assistant Commissioner of Police, Homicide, FCID; Zonal CID, Zone 9, Umuahia; Commanding Officer, No. 11 PMF, Calabar; Divisional Police Officer in Asokoro and Dutse Alhaji, Abuja; Coordinator of Courses, Police Detective College, Enugu; Commanding Officer, No. 26 PMF, Uyo; Divisional Crime Officer, Sango Otta, Ogun State; and Police Public Relations Officer, Rivers State Police Command.
The new Commissioner has also completed several professional and strategic training programmes in Nigeria and abroad.
These include the Policy, Strategy and Leadership Course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru; Joint Operational Planning Course conducted with the British Military Advisory and Training Team; Incident Site Commander’s Course by the British High Commission College of Policing; Tactical, Operational and Strategic Intelligence Command and Management Course; Advanced Detective Course; and various Squadron Commanders and Combat Operations Courses.
Ama has also received recognition for professional courage and operational effectiveness.
In 2007, he received a commendation award for uncommon bravery, courage and gallantry following the recovery of an AK-47 rifle during a shootout with armed robbers in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.
He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Nigeria Psychological Association and Nigeria Institute of Police Studies.
On assuming office, Ama pledged to consolidate existing security gains in Anambra and strengthen cooperation between the police and other security agencies.
He also called for deeper engagement with traditional institutions, community leaders, youths, women and other stakeholders in the state.
The new CP assured residents, visitors and businesses of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, preventing and combating crime, upholding the rule of law and creating a safe and secure environment across Anambra State.
