The death toll from devastating floods along the China-Nepal border has surpassed 1,000, with Nepal reporting 987 deaths and China confirming 16 fatalities in Tibet.
Nepal’s disaster authority announced the latest figure on Tuesday as rescue operations entered their seventh day following Wednesday’s disaster.
The combined death toll in Nepal and China now stands at 1,003.
The number of people missing in Nepal fell to 3,916 as rescue teams continued searching affected areas, while the number of recovered bodies increased.
In China, state media reported that 546 people remained missing, bringing the overall number of missing people across the two countries to 4,462.
Foreign nationals account for a significant portion of those still missing. Nepal’s list includes 583 foreigners from more than 30 nationalities, while China has reported 261 missing foreigners from 23 countries.
Indians make up one of the largest groups among the missing in Nepal. New Delhi said 275 Indian citizens and another 128 people of Indian origin remain unaccounted for.
The United States State Department reported on Sunday that 85 US citizens were among those missing.
Other nationalities reported missing include 62 Ukrainians, 51 Malaysians, 42 Australians and 33 British citizens, according to reports from Nepal’s tourist board and diplomatic missions.
The disaster has also affected neighbouring India, where authorities in Uttar Pradesh said they had recovered 17 bodies from rivers flowing from Nepal.
The bodies are believed to belong to victims of the floods, but Indian authorities are still working to identify them. They have not been included in the current death toll.
Rescue operations continue as authorities in Nepal and China search for those still missing and work to recover more victims from areas devastated by the floods.
