The Registrar and Chief Executive of the National Examinations Council, Dantani Wushishi, has been elected Vice-President of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa.
The development was announced alongside the decision to award NECO the right to host the 2027 AEAA Conference in Abuja.
The decisions were endorsed by the AEAA General Assembly during the association’s 42nd Conference in Arusha, Tanzania, according to a statement signed by NECO’s acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani.
“The twin developments reflect growing recognition of Nigeria’s influence in educational assessment amid the demands of digital transformation and the integration of artificial intelligence in Testing and Certification,” the statement said.
Wushishi’s election follows his service on the AEAA Executive Council as the representative of the West African sub-region.
Since becoming NECO Registrar in 2021, Wushishi has overseen reforms focused on modernising examination administration, expanding the council’s technological infrastructure and increasing its international presence.
NECO said its examinations are now conducted in eight foreign countries, extending the council’s operations beyond Nigeria.
The 2027 AEAA Conference is scheduled to hold in Abuja from August 16 to 20. The event is expected to bring together policymakers, researchers, examination administrators and education experts from across Africa.
The conference will also provide Nigeria an opportunity to showcase its reforms in educational assessment and its response to emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.
Who Is Dantani Wushishi?
Born on April 5, 1965, in Wushishi, Niger State, Wushishi is a Science Education scholar specialising in Chemistry Education.
Before joining NECO, he had an academic career at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, and the Federal University of Technology, Minna, where he held several leadership positions.
His previous roles include Postgraduate Coordinator in the Department of Science Education at FUT Minna, Sub-Dean of the School of Science and Science Education, and Head of the Department of Science Education at FUT Minna and Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Wushishi as NECO Registrar in 2021, while President Bola Tinubu renewed his appointment earlier this year.
His reappointment was widely viewed as an endorsement of the technological and administrative reforms implemented under his leadership.
Wushishi’s election and NECO’s selection to host the 2027 AEAA Conference further strengthen Nigeria’s position in Africa’s educational assessment sector.
