Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor has defended the tough and often controversial characters she portrays on screen, insisting that her performances are intended to spotlight social issues rather than reflect her real-life personality.
Speaking during a recent video conversation, the 67-year-old screen icon addressed a perception that has followed her throughout her celebrated acting career, the belief among some viewers that the stern and villainous characters she plays mirror who she is away from the camera.
Widely recognised for her legendary “Mama G” persona, Ozokwor explained that many people wrongly associate her on-screen roles with her personal character.
According to her, the purpose of those performances is to bring attention to behaviours and societal problems that often go unnoticed or are accepted as normal.
“I feel bold to expose the ills in society. Those things happen and nobody wants to expose them. I am exposing them.”
The actress noted that her portrayals of strict mothers, difficult mothers-in-law and other antagonistic characters are professional interpretations designed to tell important stories and provoke reflection among audiences.
She stressed that the characters she plays should not be confused with her real-life identity.
“I am not like that, but I expose it. I am extremely proud of myself and Mama G lovers are proud of me.”
Ozokwor said acting remains a powerful storytelling tool that allows performers to explore complex human behaviours while encouraging conversations about morality, family dynamics and societal values.
The veteran actress added that she appreciates the support of fans who understand the deeper message behind her performances and recognise the distinction between fiction and reality.
Over the years, Ozokwor has built a remarkable reputation as one of Nollywood’s most influential actresses, earning widespread recognition for bringing depth, emotion and authenticity to some of the industry’s most memorable characters.
Her portrayal of strong-willed, complex and often controversial figures has helped cement her place as one of the most enduring faces in the Nigerian film industry.
