The Federal Government has announced plans to temporarily close Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, for 25 days to allow for runway rehabilitation and extension ahead of the Christmas travel season.
The closure is scheduled to begin on October 20, 2026, according to a statement issued by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
Keyamo said the decision followed consultations involving the Federal Government, the Imo State Government and aviation stakeholders in the South-East.
The minister disclosed that he had spoken with Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma about the project, describing the collaboration as necessary to improve aviation infrastructure, strengthen safety and support regional economic growth.
Runway Repairs and Extension Planned
The rehabilitation will involve repairing deteriorated sections of the runway pavement, treating surface cracks, filling potholes and resurfacing affected areas, alongside the planned runway extension.
According to Keyamo, the project will be executed by FAAN in partnership with the Imo State Government.
When completed, the works are expected to restore the runway to a safer and more reliable operational condition and improve its capacity to accommodate larger aircraft, subject to applicable operational and regulatory requirements.
Keyamo said the timing was important because passenger traffic and flight movements to Owerri traditionally increase during the Christmas period.
He acknowledged that the temporary closure would inconvenience passengers and other airport users but maintained that aviation safety remained a priority.
The minister said the Federal Government would continue engaging the Imo State Government, airlines and other stakeholders to coordinate the project and minimise disruptions.
Passengers Advised to Contact Airlines
Passengers scheduled to travel through Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport during the closure have been advised to contact their respective airlines for information on flight cancellations, rescheduling and alternative travel arrangements.
Keyamo added that the confirmed closure and reopening dates would be communicated through official aviation channels.
The planned intervention is intended to improve runway conditions before the festive travel rush, when demand for flights to and from Owerri typically rises.
