Team Nigeria’s medal haul at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow continued to grow on Monday as weightlifter Onome Omolola Didih claimed the country’s fifth gold medal with a record-breaking performance in the women’s 53kg event.
Didih dominated the competition from start to finish, setting three Commonwealth Games records to secure the gold medal.
She opened with a 93kg snatch, establishing a new Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth record. The Nigerian followed with a 113kg clean and jerk, setting another Games and Commonwealth record before finishing with a 206kg total lift, also a new Games and Commonwealth record.
Her outstanding performance earned her a comfortable victory over India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav, who won silver with a total lift of 199kg, while Canada’s Rebeka Groulx claimed bronze with 178kg.
Didih’s victory came just hours after fellow Nigerian weightlifter Edidiong Umoafia secured the country’s fourth gold medal in the men’s 71kg event.
Umoafia also produced a record-breaking display, lifting a Commonwealth Games record total of 319kg, comprising 147kg in the snatch and 172kg in the clean and jerk, to finish ahead of Samoa’s Joseph Tafi and Nauru’s Elgin Moses.
Nigeria began its gold medal campaign through para powerlifting, where Esther Nworgu, Folashade Oluwafemiayo and Riluwan Idris each won gold on the opening days of the Games.
The country has also collected silver medals through Roland Ezuruike, Esther Oyema, Rita Ferdinand and weightlifter Ruth Asuquo Nyong.
With athletics and more weightlifting events still to come, Team Nigeria will be aiming to extend its impressive medal-winning run in Glasgow.
