Marvel Studios has officially announced that British actor David Jonsson will play the next Black Panther, taking on the role of an adult Prince T’Challa II in Black Panther 3.
The announcement was made at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where director Ryan Coogler joined Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige on the Hall H stage to unveil the next chapter of the blockbuster franchise.
The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on December 15, 2028, with Jonsson portraying the grown-up son of King T’Challa, the beloved character immortalised by the late Chadwick Boseman.
Boseman’s performance in the 2018 Black Panther became a global cultural milestone before the actor died of colon cancer in 2020. Rather than recast the role, Marvel paid tribute to his legacy in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever by passing the mantle to T’Challa’s sister, Shuri, played by Letitia Wright.
Prince T’Challa II was first introduced in the emotional mid-credits scene of Wakanda Forever as a young boy. Jonsson’s casting now marks the character’s evolution into Wakanda’s next protector and future king.
Returning cast members Letitia Wright and Winston Duke, who plays M’Baku, also joined Coogler and Jonsson during the Comic-Con presentation, confirming their return for the third installment.
Coogler also revealed that Black Panther 3 will become the first Marvel Cinematic Universe film to be shot entirely on large-format celluloid film, a move aimed at delivering a more immersive cinematic experience, particularly in IMAX theatres.
The film is expected to serve as one of the first major standalone stories following the events of Avengers: Secret Wars, which is scheduled for release on December 17, 2027.
Before Black Panther 3 arrives, Marvel’s upcoming theatrical slate includes Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31, 2026, followed by Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, 2026, featuring Robert Downey Jr.’s debut as Doctor Doom.
