Big Opportunity: Labour Party Unveils ₦2.8m Essay Competition for Abia Students

Labour Party officials launch the Labour Party essay competition at the Umuahia secretariat.

Categories and Prizes in the Labour Party Essay Competition

The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party has launched a statewide essay competition open to secondary and tertiary institution students, offering cash prizes totalling ₦2.8m in a bid to draw young people more directly into conversations about governance and public policy in the state.

The Labour party said the initiative was designed to promote youth participation in governance while encouraging young Abians to contribute practical ideas toward the state’s development. Speaking at the launch, held at the party’s secretariat in Umuahia on Thursday, the state secretary, Chuks Akamadu, described the competition as the first of its kind organised by the Abia chapter of the Labour Party.

Akamadu tied the initiative directly to the party’s broader ideological commitments, framing it as a natural extension of its stated values around civic education and democratic participation. “The competition aligns with the Labour Party’s commitment to promoting equal opportunity, social justice, civic education, and responsible political participation,” he said, adding that “the exercise seeks to stimulate intellectual engagement among young Abians while generating practical ideas and policy recommendations that could contribute to governance and development.”

He situated the competition within the party’s self-understanding of its role in a functioning democracy, arguing that political parties carry a responsibility that extends beyond electoral contests into civic formation. “We are doing this because the Labour Party is a political party that is alive to its responsibilities in a democratic society. We are committed to educating citizens, promoting democratic values, and encouraging greater youth participation in the political process,” he stated.

The essay topic chosen for the competition — “The New Abia and Need for Consolidation” — points directly to the political moment the party hopes to capture. According to Akamadu, the competition is specifically designed to gather young people’s perspectives on the achievements recorded under the administration of Governor Alex Otti and on how those gains might be sustained going forward, effectively inviting the state’s students to weigh in on the trajectory of Abia’s governance themselves.

The competition is structured around two categories, each carrying its own prize tier. “For Category A (Secondary School Students), the winner will receive ₦500,000, while the second and third positions will receive ₦300,000 and ₦250,000 respectively,” Akamadu said. He added that Category B, open to tertiary institution students, carries a larger purse: “For Category B (Tertiary Institution Students), the first prize is ₦1 million, while the second and third prize winners will receive ₦500,000 and ₦250,000 respectively.”

Beyond the headline cash prizes, Akamadu confirmed that consolation prizes would also be awarded to outstanding participants who fall outside the top three positions in either category, while the schools attended by the eventual prize winners would receive special recognition as part of the overall competition — a structure intended to extend recognition and incentive beyond just the top-placing entrants themselves.

On logistics, Akamadu said entries must not exceed 1,500 words and should be submitted electronically to Labour party’s official email address on or before July 17, with the prize presentation ceremony scheduled to hold on August 3. The relatively tight submission window suggests the party is moving quickly to capitalise on current political momentum around the administration’s three-year track record.

Akamadu used the occasion to commend Governor Alex Otti for what he described as the administration’s achievements over the past three years, crediting those accomplishments as the direct inspiration behind the essay competition itself. He closed his remarks by framing the initiative as part of a broader generational handover of political voice and responsibility within the state. “The future of Abia belongs to our young people. Through this competition, we are giving them a voice to contribute to the political and developmental conversation shaping our state,” he said.
