The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Igbekele Ajibefun, said the decision followed concerns that students were increasingly unable to concentrate during lessons because of phone use.

He warned that students caught violating the directive would face disciplinary action and have their phones forfeited.

The commissioner also said the government was placing greater emphasis on the Safe School Initiative established by the governor. The committee is headed by the education commissioner and includes representatives of security agencies.
